2026 Curriculum Update

We recognize the current “Western” world view of education is a changing landscape of values and societal views of what the education and care of our young children can be. Early Learning and Childcare has a unique and valuable role to play in the current context of society. The care of our young children outside the family unit, is a responsibility akin to a parents duty to provide food, shelter and nurture. Early Childhood Education and care providers are a familys’ ally in supporting their child in achieving their social, emotional and physical foundation to achieve success later in life, no matter what education style or lifestyle path the family or child chooses for their life journey.

In 2025, with our staffing restructure, we took upon the opportunity to re-evaluate what Early Childhood Education means to our families, educators and community, to determine how we could adjust and update our curriculum to reflect a more authentic view of how we as educators, currently view  Early Childhood Education and Care in BC.

At Jack and Jill Early Learning, Our Core Plan is regarded as our curriculum and comprises our Learning Environment, Learning Community, and Learning Plan.

Our Learning Environment

Our learning environment is a whole, formed by physical, psychological and social elements, which includes our facility, immediate neighborhood (forest & beaches) and social settings (interacting with our community neighbours: Gibson Seniors Centre & neighbourhood businesses) that are functionally linked to each other.

Our Learning Community – Educators & Families

Our educators and families form the solid background of our learning community. Referred to as “our Partnership” this Partnership involves participation that goes further than cooperation. Our Educators key role is to share the day-to-day education and care with parents. This is achieved through our Parent Education conversations & initiatives and the positive experiences a child returns home with. As a Non-Profit, we require parents and vested & vetted community members to be on our Board of Executives who support our organizations success. Our Executive Director ensures the Day to Day operations are aligned with our Non-profit Bylaws & Constitution and Budget, and that our Education team aligns with our Vancouver Coastal Health Child Care license (BC Child care Regulations) and our Core Plan.

We follow the nature of relationships between parents and educators as an essential part of the child’s well-being. This journey of cooperation requires mutual, continuous and committed interaction in all matters concerning the child, where the experience of being heard and mutual respect are essential for attaining a shared understanding.

Our Educators(staff) are responsible for the care, education and teaching elements of all models (Waldorf, Montessori, Emilia Reggio, High Scope etc) but are primarily focused on a Nature-based learning model. Our educators all hold BC ECE or ECEA, Childhood First Aid certifications and have clear Criminal Record Checks and are life long learners in the Early Childhood Educational field. Each of our educators share a keen interest in the holistic view on guiding and supporting preschool age children and have the shared value of supporting families build their child’s foundation of life skills, love of life long learning, and supporting the early years stages of a child’s social, emotional and physical journey.

Our Learning Plan

In our Learning Plan, the educators’ work and the child’s experiences are intertwined with an emphasis on thematic, nature-inspired, play-based learning that inheritably incompasses age-appropriate areas of language, literacy and communication.

Our Core Learning Plan is influenced by the BC ELF (Early Learning Framework) which emphasises the holistic nature of Early Childhood Education and Care in BC, through the nurture and support of positive relationships and experiences, developed in the learning environment with children, families, educators, and our wider community in our natural environment.

Our plan is strongly oriented towards the upbringing of children in relation to our local environment. The transfer of knowledge, culture and values adapted from our local social environment  is seen as our central task., where learning and acquiring skill & knowledge, even if by osmosis, is seen as part of a child’s upbringing through the participation in healthy age appropriate experiences.

Registering and enrolling in our programs means you are committing to be be enrolled from Sept – June. Our educators are hired based on our September enrollment, under yearly contract.

Our programs are run by our Non-Profit Society(Jack and Jill Parent Participation Preschool Society), who follow our own Constitution and Bylaws and the BC Societies Act. When families enroll their child in our program, the family becomes a member of our Non-profit Society. Families cease to be members at the end of each school year, unless their child is already enrolled in the next school year. Members are required to “vote in” Executives, approve Budgets and make group decisions on major capital expenses at our Annual General Meeting. Executives(Directors) fulfill the Non-profit requirements of the Society.

Parents are encouraged to engage with our educators on learning what developmental milestones their child is achieving, to discuss any behaviour questions or frustrations they are having, or light-bulb moments, through daily conversation and through our parent education opportunities.

And finally, we see educators and membership, as our own community of families, where when we get together, we can respectfully share experiences, ideas, stories, achievements or be a sounding board, for each other. These connections are vital to the formation of healthy, family relationships, friendships and can be a life line for many.
